Smartphones fighting crime in Colorado

Joining the battle against crime will now include smartphones. Samsung’s 2018 Galaxy S9 will be used by the Kit Carson County Sheriff’s Office in Burlington, Colorado, it was announced by the world’s largest smartphone device manufacturer.

The phones will be included in the duty vests worn by deputies and provide communication from the field to the police station.  It will also be used as a body camera and a tool to document evidence with the help of the built-in digital cameras. The smartphone will also have built into them a push-to-talk walkie-talkie capability. These Galaxy S9 devices will also assist the Sheriff’s Department in locating their staff.

The Galaxy S9 smartphones that are being used by the deputies will be connected to AT&T’s FirstNet Ready public safety communications network. 

According to FirstNet Ready’s website, its platform it says, “bring(s) 21st-century tools to public safety agencies and first responders, allowing them to get more information quickly and helping them to make faster and better decisions.”

The first smartphone to be certified by FirstNet Ready was the Galaxy S9 according to Samsung. First responders using the FirstNet Ready connected Galaxy S9 deviceswill have priority over local citizen’s calls which will be pre-empted over FirstNet’s Band 14 and throughout AT&T’s 4G LTE network.

According to Samsung all of its high-end Galaxy smartphones devices will come with FirstNet Ready.

The Galaxy S9 uses Visual Labs software. It will allow Kit Carson County Sheriff’s Department to livestream each deputies shift, recording directly to their smartphones while back at the station’s command center everything is monitored in real time. At the same time this is happening, deputies can make calls on their Galaxy S9s.

The Samsung Galaxy S9s will have an IP-68 certification rating which means hat even while officers are in hot pursuit the smartphones will be able to withstand any dust that may kick up. They will also have the capacity to be submerged for up to 30 minutes in up to 5 feet of water.

The battery that the Galaxy S9 being used by the Kit Carson County Sheriff’s Department will be a 3000mAh battery. According to stats, this battery should last on a single charge for a shift or two.

These smartphones will be operated by by the Snapdragon 845 Mobile Platform.And on the beat the Android 9 Pie mobile operating system will be available.
